Why it matters
Free and Clean is natural clay with activated charcoal and no fragrances or dyes. It forms strong, tight clumps for easy cleaning and pours with little dust.
Purina positions it for single or multiple cats. It comes in a 38 lb box.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Good fit if
- Scent-sensitive cats
- Multi-cat homes
- Self-cleaning boxes that take clumping litter
Look elsewhere if
- Owners who want a light bag
- Flushing (clay isn't flushable)
- Crystal-tray boxes
Pros and cons
Pros
- Unscented
- Charcoal
- No dyes
Cons
- Heavy box
- Not flushable
- Clay dust when poured hard
Limitations to weigh
- In a self-cleaning box, use it only where the box's maker accepts clumping litter; most globe and open-top boxes do, crystal-tray boxes don't.
- Switch litters gradually by mixing in the new one over about a week; abrupt changes can put cats off the box.
- The bag weight is what you carry, not how long it lasts; lighter formulas cover the same use with less weight.
